How To Grow
White Onion Sets
Who do I suit? Everyone who has a garden or outdoor area!
Planting Sets
-
Sow outdoors until May, somewhere they will get plenty of sunshine (they like heat)
-
Ensure there are no stones, weeds and weed roots in soil before sowing seed
-
Soil needs to have good drainage and be fertile (e.g. add compost to top layer of soil and rake in before planting)
-
The soil should be moist before sowing so water soil day before if dry
-
Place the set (small onion bulb) into the soil so that the tip is just visible above the surface
-
Position the sets approx. 15cm apart from each other
-
Press down on soil to firm soil around the set
-
Keep the soil weed free, ensuring you don’t damage plant in the process
-
Ensure soil remains moist, don’t allow to dry out.
-
Rake/break up top of soil on a dry day, avoiding damaging the plant.
-
To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 6 – 8 weeks with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried milled seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie)
Growing Time:
-
Approx. 5 months
Harvest:
-
When stems turn yellow and fall over, slightly lift onions in their position to snap the onion’s roots and halt further growth. Leave for 2 weeks (allows onion to expand in the soil).
-
Harvest on sunny day – lift from earth.
-
Can be eaten directly after harvest but if drying to store, leave exposed to sun/wind for approx. 10 days for drying (or dry indoors if wet outside)
Tip: Don’t plant onions in the same location every year!
