  • How to Grow Me

    Sowing/Planting Seeds

    • Sow directly outdoors in soil with partial shade or full sun

    • Soil should be fine, rich/fertile soil (e.g. compost, and ensure location drains well). Ensuring soil is fine is important to prevent seed falling down between clumps of soil and therefore being too deep to germinate.

    • Ensure there are no stones, weeds and weed roots in soil before sowing seed.

    • Sow 3 seeds approx. 15 cm apart and if planting more than one row, rows should be approx. 25 cm apart.

    • Make hole approx. 1 cm deep, watering soil before placing seeds in. Place 3 seeds in hole and cover with 1cm of soil, pressing down gently on top of soil to firm. Gently water.

    • Germination takes approx. 2 - 3 weeks.

    • If multiple seedlings have sprouted in each spot, to assist growth, thin them to allow the strongest seedling to flourish (thinning is removing some plants that are growing too close to each other, to allow strongest plant to grow).

    • Only thin when the plant’s true leaves have emerged (note the first leaves to appear once a seed germinates (typically 1/2 leaves) are called cotyledons, and provide nutrients to the seed until the plants first true leaves grow).

    • To thin – best to identify strongest/biggest/healthiest looking seedling in each spot, and use a scissors to cut the ones you want to remove at the base of the plant, just above the soil level

    • Keep the soil weed free, ensuring you don’t damage plant in the process.

    • Ensure soil remains moist, don’t allow to dry out.

    • To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 6 weeks or so with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried milled  seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie).

    Growing Time:

    • Approx. 7 months

    • Harvest when foliage starts to die away

    • Ensure plant is watered well for several days before harvesting

    • Use fork to lift roots from soil

Tip:  Parsnips store well over winter when left in the soil!
