  • How to Grow Me

    Sowing Seed

    • Sow indoors using large yoghurt pot or bean tin with holes punched in the base for drainage

    • Fill pot/tin ⅔ full with compost and water well

    • Sow 2-3 seeds per pot/tin, 1.5cm deep in compost.

    • Gently water

    • If 2 seeds germinate cut the weaker seedlings at stem, leaving the strongest remaining plant

    • Seedlings are ready to transplant (move to aid growth) once they have developed 4 - 5 true leaves (approx. 4 weeks after sowing)

    • Harden plants for 7 days or so before transplanting –  bring them outdoors each day for a few hours and ensure they are well watered

    • Firm, fertile  and free draining soil is best to transplant cauliflower seedling into

    • Create hole in soil the size of the seedling and place seedling in and compact soil around seedling once in place.

    • Allow approx. 45 cm between plants (can plant seedlings as close as 20cm from each other if tight on space, but resulting cauliflower will be quite small)

    • Cauliflower happiest in partial shade but also OK in sun

    • Ensure plant has enough water to prevent plant bolting (the plant sends up a flower stalk and becomes inedible).  On hot days water twice per day, on dull days once every 2 days.

    • Ensure soil around plant is kept weed free.

    • As the plants grow, earth up around the plants’ stems to aid growth (e.g. add approx. 5cm dry soil on all sides to surround the plant)

    • To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 3 - 4 weeks with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie)

    Growing Time:

    • Approx. 2 months

    • Harvest when the curds are white, packed firm and tight

    • Cut with a sharp knife at the point of the plant close to ground level

Tip: Water well the week before harvest
