  • How to Grow Me

    Sowing/Planting Seeds

    • Can be sown directly outdoors until July

    • Can be sown in small containers (e.g. empty tin (being careful if sharp edges on tin), a yoghurt/plastic container or similar with holes punched in the bottom for drainage) in rich soil (e.g. compost) or can use sowing tray

    • Ensure soil drains well – putting a few stones at the bottom of the container, before placing the soil on top of it, will assist drainage

    • Ensure soil is moist before sowing seed

    • Place 2 seeds per container, covering with approx. 1.5cm soil and pressing gently down to firm soil.

    • Germination will take approx. 7 – 10 days

    • If multiple seedlings have sprouted in each container, to assist growth, thin them to allow the strongest seedling to flourish (thinning is removing some plants that are growing too close to each other, to allow strongest plants to grow).

    • To thin – best to identify strongest/biggest/healthiest looking seedling in each container, and use a scissors to cut the ones you want to remove at the base of the plant, just above the soil level

    Transplanting

    • Transplant seedling approx. 4 weeks after sowing (when seedling is approx 7/8 cm tall) on a dull day, ideally.

    • Soil to transplant into needs to be well drained, fertile soil (e.g. compost added through soil) as cabbage is a hungry plant. Firm soil is also recommended to allow strong ground support for the weight of the cabbage head and ensure there are no weeds/stones in soil before transplanting into.

    • Ensure seedlings are well watered prior to transplanting and water hole in soil well prior to placing seedling in.

    • Create hole in soil to accommodate seedling size, place seedling in and important to firm soil well around the roots of the seedling to ensure that the roots are supported. Gently firm the soil around the remainder of the seedling.

    • Allow for approx. 35 - 40cm between seedlings.

    • Keep the soil weed free, ensuring you don’t damage plant in the process.

    • Ensure soil remains moist, don’t allow to dry out.

    • To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 6 weeks or so with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried milled  seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie).

    Growing Time:

    • Approx. 2.5 months

    Harvest

    • As soon as a compact and firm cabbage head has formed

    • Cut at base of stem

Tip: As the plant grows, recommended to add approx. 5cm dry soil on all sides of the stem to surround the plant in a process called “earthing up”, which helps the stem support the head of the cabbage.
