How To Grow
Plant seeds outdoors in fine, rich/fertile soil (e.g. compost, and ensure location drains well) that is sunlit. (Ensuring soil is fine is important to prevent seed falling down between clumps of soil and therefore being too deep to germinate)
Ensure there are no stones, weeds and weed roots in soil before sowing seed
Sow seed approx. 1 cm deep, with 3-4cm between plants and 20-25cm between rows if planting more than one row.
Ensure soil around plant is kept weed free - recommend using hands to weed to avoid damaging the part of the plant above the ground (may attract the root fly)
Expect germination to take 2 - 3 weeks (they will start popping their head above the ground)
Carrots don’t need a lot of watering, but in very dry weather water once every 2 - 3 weeks.
As they grow, ensure carrots are fully covered with soil to avoid them going green from direct sunlight
To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 3 - 4 weeks with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie)
Approx. 2 - 3 months
Best harvested in evening
Tip: Don’t let carrots grow too big in soil - they will lose their taste
