Broad Bean Seeds

How To Grow

Sowing/Planting Seed

  • Can be sown from April until end of June

  • Grow best in fertile soil (e.g. compost) that drains well, with sun, in a sheltered location

  • Sow 5 cm deep, with plants 20cm apart. If planting more than one row leave approx. 30cm between rows.

  • Cover with soil and gently press down on top of the soil.

  • Weed and water frequently

  • Once plant has reached approx. 30cm in height, assist plant by tying it to a supporting stake/post with some string or anything similar (can be a simple stick, piece of bamboo, anything that will support its upright growth)

  • To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 3 - 4 weeks with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie)

Growing time:

  • Approx. 3 - 4 months

Harvest:

  • Can be harvested once pods begin to swell

  • Pick regularly from the bottom of each plant and work your way up. The more you pick the more they will produce.

  • Pods that have grown to approx. 5 - 7cm long can be harvested and consumed whole (not removing beans by shelling).

  • Pods approx. 12 - 15 cm long are suitable for shelling

Tip: Don’t allow bean pod to grow beyond approx. 15cm as taste and texture will be undermined
