Broad Bean Seeds
How To Grow
Sowing/Planting Seed
Can be sown from April until end of June
Grow best in fertile soil (e.g. compost) that drains well, with sun, in a sheltered location
Sow 5 cm deep, with plants 20cm apart. If planting more than one row leave approx. 30cm between rows.
Cover with soil and gently press down on top of the soil.
Weed and water frequently
Once plant has reached approx. 30cm in height, assist plant by tying it to a supporting stake/post with some string or anything similar (can be a simple stick, piece of bamboo, anything that will support its upright growth)
To encourage growth and deter pests, feed every 3 - 4 weeks with organic fertiliser (e.g. dried seaweed fertiliser, sachets available on sow.ie)
Growing time:
Approx. 3 - 4 months
Harvest:
Can be harvested once pods begin to swell
Pick regularly from the bottom of each plant and work your way up. The more you pick the more they will produce.
Pods that have grown to approx. 5 - 7cm long can be harvested and consumed whole (not removing beans by shelling).
Pods approx. 12 - 15 cm long are suitable for shelling
Tip: Don’t allow bean pod to grow beyond approx. 15cm as taste and texture will be undermined
